In 2002, SDP was founded. They didn't participate in elections of 2002 and 2004 but they supported left-wing electoral alliances. In the summer of 2005, they announced a "Sosyalist Forum" for negotiations of a broader unification.
It is led by Filiz Koçali, the only female party chairman (along with Aysel Tuğluk of Democratic Society Party, which has a collective leadership) in Turkey, as of 2006. Akın Birdal who was elected to the Parliament in 2007 is the honorary chairman of SDP.
