It hosted several international competitions including the2000 African Cup of Nations final and World Cup qualifying matches. It also served as the main stadium for the1973 All-Africa Games .When the stadium was built in
1972 it had a capacity of 45,000. The capacity was then expanded to 55,000 in 1999.The National Stadium has been left to dilapidate since 2002.
