Louros

Louros (Λούρος) is a small town of 2,044 inhabitants and also the municipal seat of the Louros municipality, which has 5,270 people (2001 census). It is located in the Preveza Prefecture in northwestern Greece. Louros' official name is Lamari and it is built next to the mountain Valaoritis. Up to a few hundred years ago, the Louros valley was a bayou. Later, it dried up and its good quality earth along the help of the Louros River that runs through it, has helped the local agriculture with production of olives, oranges and tomatoes. Its original inhabitants, up to 1965, were Gypsies and Aromanian sheep-herders (in Greek: Βλάχοι) but later some of the Greek population left their villages at the rocky mountains nearby and built houses in the area. The herders were dubbed, "Hoskufi," (Greek for Ablafor), by the local landed gentry. The municipality has a land area of 176.075 km². The largest other towns in the municipality are Néos Oropós (pop. 1,381), Stefáni (513), Vrysoúla (263), Áno Ráchi (260), and Áno Kotsanópoulo (206).
