Nadim Arabic. Noun. Masculine. Companion and familiar friend; partner in table fellowship; faithful comrade.
It has the meaning friend, drinking companion , "drinking buddy" or confidant. It pre-dates Islam, appearing in numerous poems and stories romanticizing alcohol (khamr in Arabic).
It is common among all communities in the Arab world including Christians, Muslims and Druze. Its prevalence varies with local tradition rather than religion.
In Um Kulthum's song Al Atlal, she sings about "Nadim El Roh" Nadim, of close friend of the soul.
