footnotes =Isfana (Исфана) is a small town of about 20,000 at the extreme western end of
Batken Oblast in southernKyrgyzstan , at the southern fringe of theFergana valley. Backed up against the enormous mountains in the south and surrounded on three sides byTajikistan , the town and the nearby villages are largely cut off from the rest of Kyrgyzstan, making life very difficult. The word "isfana" is believed to come from the Iranian Sogdian word "Aspanakent" which means "the land of horses".There used to be a lot factories during soviet period, but nowadays they are closed because of the difficult economic situation in the country. People are working abroad to make living. They go especially to Russia, Kazakhistan and Uzbekistan.
