Akama-ku, Munakata

Akama refers to the Akama division of Munakata city in Fukuoka Prefecture, or the area around the Karatsu highway Akama hotel. It is a historical place and old rows of houses belonging to the Akama hotel still remain. Moreover there used to be Hakusan castle (Mount Haku) and Tsutagadake castle (Mount Joh), residences of daimyo. The Shinto priest of Munakata Shrine, Mr. Munakata, was a local military leader in medieval times. It is also connected to the period in history when Takamori Saigō and Shinsaku Takasugi were in conflict with the national Government.

Nowadays it is the center of the Munakata city zone, and it has half of the population of Munakata City, which is growing.

Origin of the name

Yoshidome of the Yoshitake area rode on a red horse(akama) and greeted Emperor Jimmu.

Directions

To Akama hotel or Mount Joh, get off at JR Kyouikudai-mae station or the Nishitetsu Railroad Akama office. For central Akama, use JR Akama station.
