All Our Yesterdays (TV series)

"All Our Yesterdays" was a television programme, produced by Granada Television, which ran weekly from 1960 to 1973 and was revived from 1987 to 1989. The format was simple: a presenter introduced snippets of newsreel that had been shown in cinemas exactly 25 years ago that week. The exception was the final series which concentrated on the events of 1939.

The programme's presenters were:
* James Cameron - 1960 to 1961
* Brian Inglis - 1961 to 1973
* Bernard Braden - 1987 to 1989

The years to 1964 were primarily concerned with the lighthearted fare presented to audiences in the mid-to-late 1930s. The series continued mostly with war footage from 1964 to 1970. Comic relief was provided by wartime newspaper cartoons, especially those by Osbert Lancaster for the Daily Express. The captions were read expressively by actors.

One wartime newsreel which found a new audience thanks to this programme, was "Hoch der Lambeth Valk". This propaganda film of a Nazi rally, with goose-stepping parades, was re-edited, reversing frames in some sequences, so that the marchers appeared to be dancing to the Cockney song "The Lambeth Walk". The effect became an instant favourite with the TV audience.
