From its inception in 1988 until 2001, WWHR-FM was known as New Rock 92. The general manager was Bart White, an associate professor of broadcasting at the university. In 2001, new broadcasting instructor Marjorie Yambor became the general manager, and New Rock 92 became Revolution 91.7, the name by which is still goes today. Along with the name change came a new tower and a boost in power, from 100 watts to 1,000 watts, expanding the station's broadcast radius from four miles to about thirty miles (a 3,000 watt equivalence).
