South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR) H Class is a class of0-4-4 Tsteam locomotive designed for passenger work, designed byHarry Wainwright .Overview
Sixty-four were built between 1904 and 1909, with a further two being erected in 1915 on the orders of
Richard Maunsell . These had been ordered and their components built, but not erected earlier. All entered Southern Railway stock in 1923 and had 1000 added to their numbers.
Two were withdrawn during the
Second World War , but the remaining 64 enteredBritish Railways stock in 1948. BR added 30000 to their numbers. The BR numbers were in the range 31005-31554 but there were many gaps because the H class numbers were jumbled up with other classes. Some members of the H class were equipped for
push-pull train working in 1949.Preservation
One locomotive, SECR No. 263 (SR 1263, BR 31263), survives and has been steamed on the
Bluebell Railway inSussex . This engine received major repairs in the 1990s to enable it to continue in service, including an entire new rear frame section, but it is now again out of use awaiting a full overhaul.ources
