4-4-0 steamtender locomotive built for express passenger service on theSouth Eastern and Chatham Railway . Although designed byHarry Wainwright , they were built during the Maunsell era, twelve byBeyer Peacock and ten by Borsig ofBerlin . The Borsig locomotives were completed just in time before the outbreak ofWorld War I . They were supplied in knocked down form and assembled atAshford railway works by Borsig employees.Numbering
SECR numbers were 760-781 and all passed to the Southern Railway (SR) in 1923. The SR initially added an "A" prefix to the SECR numbers and later renumbered the engines 1760-1781. All passed to
British Railways (BR) in 1948 and BR numbered them 31760-31781. They were withdrawn between 1956 and 1961 and none has been preserved.L1 class
The Southern Railway L1 class was a development, by Maunsell in 1926, of the L class. Weight was increased to 57 tons 16 cwt and the engines had long-travel
piston valves , side-window cab and other detail alterations. BR numbers were 31753-31759 and 31782-31789.ources
