Tai Nam Wan (大南灣) means Big South Bay. It is the a large bay at the south end of the island. As there is another south bay, "Nam Wan" (南灣), near Sai Tso Wan at island west, some refers this bigger one as big south bay. The Chinese name Nam Wan (南環) is mistakenly from Nam Wan (南灣). The two characters of Wan in Cantonese are of same pronunciation except the tone.
Location
The bay is south of the highest peak among
Tsing Yi Peak on the island,betweenNam Wan Kok andNg Tsang Lau and faces the west water of famousVictoria Harbour . The water is anchorage of cargo vessels from all around the world.Buildings
The bay was completely reclaimed for Tsing Yi Power Station and the shore line is straightened. The power station was built in 1960s and currently demolished. A smaller station
Tsing Yi Gas Turbine Power Station was established instead. An Esso Oil Depot occupies part of the reclamation.
