university located in East Stroudsburg,Pennsylvania . It is one of the 14 state universities that compose thePennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). It is commonly referred to as ESU by its students and members of the community. The university began its existence in 1893 as a preparatory school for teachers called the East StroudsburgNormal School . In 1960, additional curricula were added and the school, then called East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, became East Stroudsburg State College. It assumed its current name in 1983.Location
East Stroudsburg University is situated in the borough of East Stroudsburg, located in the
Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The university is 45 minutes southeast of theScranton /Wilkes-Barre area and 40 minutes north ofAllentown . The 62 campus buildings are located on convert|213|acre|km2|1 in the East Stroudsburg community. In addition to the academic facilities, nine
residence hall s, housing 2,200 students, and a 1,000-seat dining hall are located on campus. The Quad is a popular area on the campus where students convene to hang out, sun-bathe and play sports during the summer, fall and spring months. In addition, The Student Activity Association, Inc., owns Stony Acres, a convert|119|acre|km2|1|sing=on off-campus student recreation area nearMarshalls Creek , that includes a lodge, several cabins, a campsite, recreation areas and a lake. The campus is patrolled by the East Stroudsburg University Police Department.Buildings
Many times overlooked, the Fine and Performing arts center at the very top of campus is the main hub of the music, theater, and communication departments. The building houses several main stages including the recital hall, a black box experimental theater, and a coliseum style performance theater. The building also contains classrooms, art studios, and offices for the departments.
In 2003, ESU opened its new recreation center, the "Rec Center". This recreational facility contains an elevated indoor track, several basketball courts, racquetball rooms, various
free weight and weight machines as well as cardio machines. The Science and Technology Center is the first new major academic building since 1979. The $40,000,000 project is going to consist of state-of-the-art equipment and teaching facilities that is expected to stimulate economic growth and development in the area. The building is expected to house chemistry, math, computer science, and other various science departments. With convert|120000|sqft|m2, the building includes research and classroom space, planetarium, heated celestial observation room, as well as offices for the relocated departments. East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania offers 68
undergraduate major programs with 24 available concentrations, the largest of which (by enrollment) are Health and Physical Education K-12, Elementary Education, Biological Sciences, Business Management, Psychology, and Secondary Education. ESU recently added majors in Health Services Administration and Industrial Physics as well as more graduate study programs. Despite this, many denizens of East Stroudsburg University and outside refer to the school as "13th grade." The current student to professor ratio stands at 19:1. There are eight
residence hall s at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania: Hawthorn Hall, Hemlock Hall, Laurel Hall, Lenape Hall, Linden Hall, Minsi Hall, Shawnee Hall, and University Apartments. All residence halls are coed by floor, except for Lenape and parts of Hemlock, which are coed by room. All but Shawnee are double rooms with two students living in one room. Shawnee Hall houses all permanent triple rooms. All rooms on campus are furnished with one desk and chair, dresser, closet/wardrobe, and one standard twin bed per student. Refrigerators (4.0 cubic foot max) and microwaves (800 watt max) are allowed in the residence halls. Each floor of every residence hall has an RA or Resident Advisor who is there to assist students with daily campus problems as well as to enforce rules.East Stroudsburg University is well-known for temporarily tripling the freshman double rooms, especially in Minsi Hall and Lenape Hall. Shawnee may also be tripled, however, the rooms are suitable for three people. On average, the temporary will have the option to move out by the end of the first semester.
There is also the University Ridge Apartments located technically off-campus. Opened 18 November 2005 and located on 400 East Browns Street, the complex houses 514 students, and was a partnership project by ESU and Capstone Development Corp. The 135 apartment rooms, each divided into 10 buildings, has four single-living bedrooms, a shared living room, two shared bathrooms, a kitchenette, and a separate washroom. The units feature central air and utility, both included in the rent. The community center provides a TV lounge, cyber lounge, meeting/study room, fitness center, game room, vending area, mailboxes and management and rental offices as well as almost 500 parking spaces. Shuttle service is offered Monday - Friday to and from the nearby ESU campus and runs roughly every 20 minutes.

Vocal Performing Arts
The ESU vocal performing arts department is a very active group regularly putting on performances for school and community. There are four groups available to choose from that are readily willing to accept new members. The concert choir consists of 60-80 people that range from students to community members. Some of the recent performances in the '07-'08 school year consist of a Christmas medley at the annual winter concert and a world premiere of David Lantz's new song "When You Are Dead and Gone" and a stunning performance of the Bach Magnificat with full orchestra at the spring concert. The group is currently led by Dr. James Maroney. Also, under the leadership of Dr. Maroney are the two elite groups selected from ESU students. The A Cappella Ensemble and the Pop/Jazz Singers are two groups the perform on numerous occasions. The two groups are embarking on a nine day performance tour to China in May, 2008. Last but not least is the musical review. This is a student run production that reviews past musicals and puts them into an upbeat, show-stopping, amazing performance.
Theater
ESU has many opportunities for students to get involved in theater. Either with the ESU theater department or Stage II there are several performances that happen every year including the One Acts, which are run by the students in Stage II and the semi-yearly straight play.
Athletics
East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania's colors are Red and Black, and the team nickname is the Warriors. All teams compete in
NCAA Division II , aside from wrestling and volleyball, which compete in NCAADivision I . There are currently 10 male varsity sports available as well as 11 female varsity sports to choose from.Notable alumni
