It consists of 13 hamlets located between 950 mts. and 1550 mts. above sea level. Sitting like a balcony above the Valley of the Dora Baltea, St. Nicolas overlooks the four major latteral valleys of the mid-upper Valle D'Aosta. These are (moving up the valley); Val Grisenche, Val Savaranche, Valle di Cogne, and Valle des Rheims. One of the most beautiful hamlets ("frazioni" in Italian) is Persod which is protected by the "Belle Arti" laws. It consists of 35 houses and stalls but today has only 5 year round residents. Persod is recognizable even from the distance of a passing airplane as it the only village in the area surrounded by giant poplar trees.
Just above the frazione of Chaillod there is an artisan Fontina cheese maker.
