shrub or smallevergreen tree with a typical height of 1-4m, with somespecimens reaching 7m. The numerous smallflower s are white. The tree heath prefers acid soil. It is found mostly in the "Macchia ", dry evergreenshrubland s, all around theMediterranean region , west toPortugal and the Canary andMadeira Islands , and with disjunct areas inAfrica including theEthiopia n Highlands, the mountains ofRuwenzori and theCameroon mountains .The
wood is used for makingsmoking pipe s, and is known as briar root wood, "bruyère", or French brier.Other tall growing heaths, including the Portugal Heath "Erica lusitanica" may also sometimes be called tree heath.
