The area first saw Chinese settlers open up "kangchu" plantations in Kangkar Sungai Tiram. In the early 20th century, numerous rubber estates were established by British and Chinese planters and led to the influx of more Chinese and Indian immigrants. In the early days of Malaysian independence,
FELDA land development schemes in the area allowed more Malays to enjoy the benefits of palm oil and rubber agriculture.Since the 1990s, the urban expansion of Johor Bahru has ended Ulu Tiram's relative isolation and it is now one of the fastest growing suburbs of the city as part of the Tebrau growth corridor. The proposed
Senai-Desaru Expressway scheduled to open in 2008 is expected to further boost Ulu Tiram's growth in the future.Housing Estates
Ulu Tiram was developed by
Johor Land Berhad . Taman Bukit Tiram was once known as the "Millionaires Hill" and it still is, because of the gargantuan one-acre plots of land on which houses were built on, in "Green Plains"."Green Plains " was home to many famous doctors, engineers, lawyers, accountants and businessmen alike. Nowadays many of these professionals have moved to the likes of the city as the constraints of work have made it hard for them to travel the 18km to the city everyday. However, many of these houses are now holiday homes equipped with swimming pools and tennis courts and these houses are only occupied during the weekends or during school holidays.Medical Amenities
