Sirajganj is a town in central
Bangladesh , lying just west of theBrahmaputra River and about 70 mi. (110 km) northwest ofDhaka .Overview
It is the main town in
Sirajganj District . It consists of 15 wards and 52mohalla s. The town has a population of about 127,147. It was once considered amongCalcutta andNarayanganj as a principaljute trade centre. It is still has an importantjute industry , with products traded via road, rail, and river. Itsjute mills were the first in theBengal area. During British Rule, Sirajganj was a town in the
Pabna District ofEastern Bengal and Assam . Its location on the right bank of theJamuna River or main stream of theBrahmaputra was a 6 hour journey by steamer from the railway terminus atGoalundo . It is the chief river mart for jute in northern Bengal, with several jute presses. The jute mills were closed after the earthquake of 1897. Sirajganj has a railhead for the ferry terminus on the Western network of
Bangladesh Railway s.Tangail is the river port on the eastern side of the river. The importantJamuna bridge which replaces this ferry is nearby.External links
