Edwalton, Nottinghamshire

Edwalton is a village to the south of Nottingham in England, attached and conjoined to West Bridgford and Gamston.

History

One of the earliest mentions of Edwalton is in the Domesday book where it is listed amongst the lands given to Hugh de Grandmesnil "Domesday Book: A Complete Transliteration". London: Penguin, 2003. p.779 ISBN 0-14-143994-7] by the King. The land required more than three ploughs and there was twenty acres of meadow.

Property

The official boundaries of Edwalton are sometimes debated - Boundary Road is generally the taken as the border between West Bridgford and Edwalton.

Edwalton contains some of Nottingham's most expensive real estate, with Melton Road, Croft Road and Village Street being particularly pricey areas.

The Edwalton Hall is the largest property in the suburb, and is now a complex of exclusive mews houses and apartments. Originally a private residence of the Chaworth family, it later became a hotel and restaurant before being developed by Crosby Homes. The complex includies a gym, swimming pool and croquet lawn.

Edwalton is also the location of one of the few places with council houses in the West Bridgford area, although many homes are now owner- occupied and resell at high levels. Edwalton is varied in architectural characteristics. Landmark individually designed houses are common on many of the roads, but much of the area is new-built housing estate, constructed through the 1980s, 1990s and to the present day.

Facilities

The suburb has a primary school, church, various shopping areas as well as a golf course.Edwalton also has one private school Grosvenor School an independent day school for boys and girls age 4 - 13.

Ever since the marriage of heir to Musters estate (West Bridgford's landowners) and daughter of the Chaworth family the suburbs of West Bridgford and Edwalton have been joined, under the formation of the West Bridgford Urban District Council, which is now dissolved and part of Rushcliffe Borough Council

Green Line 6 (NCT)- Edwalton via West Bridgford, Trent Bridge, Nottingham Station to Victoria Centre (City Loop).
