Lyon County, Kentucky and studied atCentral Methodist College inFayette, Missouri . He served inWorld War I and then graduated from theUniversity of Kentucky . He worked as a newspaper editor in three cities in Kentucky—first Elizabethtown, then Lawrenceburg, and finally Richmond—and then was electedLieutenant Governor of Kentucky in 1935, defeating RepublicanJ. J. Kavanaugh by over 100,000 votes.In 1939 Johnson defeated
John Y. Brown, Sr. for the Democratic nomination forGovernor of Kentucky . United States SenatorM. M. Logan unexpectedly died in October 1939; GovernorHappy Chandler resigned and Johnson, now governor, appointed Chandler to the vacantUnited States Senate seat. In November Johnson defeated Republican nomineeKing Swope 460,834 votes to 354,704 for a full term as governor.As governor Johnson got the state's finances in order and increased funding for prisons, education, mental health and other social service programs. He also sought and won the first legislative redistricting in almost fifty years.
In 1960 Johnson was the Democratic nominee for the
United States Senate but lost toJohn Sherman Cooper . He died in 1970 in Richmond, Kentucky, and is buried in that city at Richmond Cemetery.External links
