The New Democratic Party of Ontario ran a full slate of candidates in the 1987 provincial election, and won 19 out of 130 seats to become the second-largest party in parliament. Some of the party's candidates have their own biography pages; information about others may be found here.
=Rob West (St. Catharines)=
West was president of the St. Catharines and District Labour Council in the 1980s, and spoke before a legislative committee in this capacity to oppose "no-fault" automobile insurance. He received 5,566 votes (20.04%) in the 1987 election, finishing second against Liberal incumbent Jim Bradley.
West later ran for the federal New Democratic Party in the 1988 Canadian election, and finished third in the federal St. Catharines riding with 12,260 votes (25.45%). The winner was Ken Atkinson of the Progressive Conservative Party.
As of 2005, West is a representative of the Service Employees International Union, Local 1.ON. He has spoken out against health-care cuts in the St. Catharines area. [http://www.niagarathisweek.com/na/news/story/2911486p-3373447c.html]
