Sergio Raúl Torres (born July 11, 1983 in Mar Del Plata) is an Argentine professional footballer, currently playing for Peterborough United in the English League One. He was signed from Wycombe Wanderers in July 2008. He holds an Italian passport, since his grandmother was Italian.cite news|url=http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/02/01/the_buckinghamshire_maradona_i.html|title=The Buckinghamshire Maradona in a league of his own|author=Barney Ronay|publisher="The Guardian"|date=1 February 2008]

Career

He began his career at Argentine minnows Banfield de Mar del Plata, but after two seasons he decided to leave the club in order to become a professional footballer in England. He funded his own trip to England in 2004 with the aim of impressing Brighton and Hove Albion during a two week trial. Although Albion showed no more interest, he signed for non-league Molesey before moving on to Basingstoke Town later that year. While at Basingstoke, Torres worked at Boots, stacking shelves in order to earn a living, and cycled to work.cite news|url=http://www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/display.var.1992305.0.0.php|title='I just had an aeroplane ticket and a lot of hope'|author=Dave Peters|publisher="Bucks Free Press"|date=25 January 2008]

In July 2005 Basingstoke Town played a pre-season friendly match against Wycombe Wanderers, during which Sergio impressed then manager John Gorman and was offered a two-year contract.

Sergio made his debut for Wycombe Wanderers a few weeks into the 2005/2006 season and scored his first goal for the club in the 2-0 victory over Notts County in January 2006.However since then he has only been able to make 49 first team appearances due to injuries. This meant he missed all but two matches in Wycombe's run to the Carling Cup semi final.

Torres, who had signed a contract lasting until 2010 at Adams Park, was voted the 76th best player outside the Premier League by "FourFourTwo" magazine.fact|date=February 2008

In July 2008, Torres was signed by Peterborough United for a fee reported to be in excess of £100,000cite news|url=http://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/poshnews/Torres-signs-for-Posh.4274216.jp|title=Torres Signs For Posh|author=Alan Swann|publisher="Peterborough Evening Telegraph"|date=10 July 2008] , thereby moving up a division to League One.
