The school was founded on
February 18 1952 with Mr Chua Leong Hean as the first principal. The enrollment was 91 pupils - 81 boys and 10 girls. It was the first co-educational secondary school in Singapore. The school grew rapidly and in 1955 the science laboratories, school hall and tuck shop were built. In 1956, the female population of Bartley was transferred to the newly completed
Cedar Girls' Secondary School . The school then became a boys' school in the secondary section. Post-secondary classes were also started in the same year, and female students were admitted to that level. The school also pioneered theNational Police Cadet Corps with the first unit being established in 1959.As the school grew in strength plans on building a new generation school equipped with all the facilities and with the much needed space for effective implementation of the academic and ECA programmes were mooted. In 1993, the school shifted to the former Mt. Vernon Secondary School premises while the new school was being built. In 1995 the school moved to new premises at 10 Jalan Bunga Rampai. In December 1995, a new principal, Mrs Tan So Wah, was appointed, the first woman principal. The school admitted girls at secondary level again in 1995, when the moved to the new site. Pre-university classes were phased out from the school in 1996.
