Writing career
"Across the Baricades", the second title in her best-selling
Ulster quintet, won the prestigious West German award for children's literature, the Buxtehuder Bulle, in 1986. "Tug of War" was shortlisted for theCarnegie Medal in 1989, and won the Federation of Children's Book Groups Award, theSheffield Book Award and theLancashire Children's Book Club of the Year Award. She has wonScottish Arts Council Awards for her novel "After Collette" and for her children's book "Tom and the Tree House". In 1998 she was awarded the M.B.E. for Services to Children's Literature.
