- Philoxenus (general)
Philoxenus (in Greek Φιλoξενoς) was a
Macedon ian officer appointed to superintend the collection of the tribute in the provinces north of theTaurus Mountains afterAlexander the Great 's return from Egypt (331 BC ).rf|1|arr_3.6 It would appear, however, that he did not immediately assume this command, as shortly afterwards we find him sent forward by Alexander from the field ofGaugamela to take possession ofSusa and the treasures there deposited, which he effected without opposition.rf|2|arr_3.16 After this he seems to have remained quietly in the discharge of his functions in Asia Minorrf|3|plut_22_paus_2.33, until the commencement of the year323 BC , when he conducted a reinforcement of troops fromCaria toBabylon , where he arrived just before the last illness of Alexander.rf|4|arr_7.23_24 In the distribution of the provinces which followed the death of that monarch we find no mention of Philoxenus, but in321 BC he was appointed byPerdiccas to succeed Philotas in the government ofCilicia . By what means he afterwards conciliated the favour ofAntipater we know not, but in the partition at Triparadisus after the fall of Perdiccas the same year he was still allowed to retain hissatrap y of Cilicia.rf|5|just_13.6_phot_92_diod_18.39 From this time we hear no more of him.References
