"The Immigrant - a new American musical" is a chamber musical with music by Steven M. Alper and lyrics by Sarah Knapp, and book by Mark Harelik. Originally a play by Mark Harelik based on the true story of his grandfather, it subsequently received this musical adaptation. The music of the piece combines Jewish and Eastern European music with Country-Western and Texas swing.

The story is quite simple: a Jewish immigrant and his wife enter into the life of an American couple in Texas. In the end, there is a signal of a new start of friendship between the two families and the hope for future.

"The Immigrant - a new American musical" was developed at CAP21 and appeared for a limited, 2-week run at the CAP21 Theatre in the fall of 2000. Work was continued on the musical at the Denver Center Theater Company and The Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami in 2001/2002. An open-ended off-Broadway run was produced by Hello Entertainment in the fall of 2004. This production was nominated for 2 Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Book of a Musical Mark Harelik and Outstanding Orchestrations Steven M. Alper.

The CAP21 production featured Evan Pappas as Haskell, Jacqueline Antaramian as Leah, Walter Charles as Milton, and Cass Morgan as Ima. After this production, the role of Haskell was played by Adam Heller.

A recording of the musical is available on Ghostlight Records.
