Francis Upritchard

Francis Upritchard (born 1976) is a New Zealand artist who is representing New Zealand at the 2009 Venice Biennale.

Life and career

Upritchard was born in New Zealand and studied at the University of Canterbury. She eventually moved to England, and is currently based in London.

In December 2001 Upritchard co-curated an exhibition with Luke Gottelier at The Bart Wells Institute in London Fields. The show featured work from Sam Basu, Mick Mee and Harry Pye.

In 2003, Upritchard was shortlisted for the Beck's Futures prize. For the prize exhibition she made "Save Yourself", a small mummy surrounded by funerary urns which lies on the gallery floor vibrating and moaning. A packet of cigarettes is tucked into its bandages, and a single glass eye can also be seen.

Upritchard has also shown drawings, diagrams and notes associating Charles, Prince of Wales with the beast from the Book of Revelation. She is represented in the UK by Kate MacGarry.

She has won New Zealand's Walters Prize for art, and was at one point in a relationship with the acclaimed author Hari Kunzru [ [http://www.nzherald.co.nz/category/story.cfm?c_id=18&objectid=10418962 nzherald.co.nz] ] .
