nihongo|Kobe College|神戸女学院大学|Kobe jogakuin daigaku, abbreviated to nihongo|KC or "Shinjo"|神女|, is a private non-sectarian liberal arts college located in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo, Japan. Chartered in 1948, it is the first women's college with university status in West Japan.

Campus

Kobe College was built by William Merrell Vories who was born in 1880 in Kansas. He was a missionary to preach about Christianity and imported and sold Mentholatum in Japan. He built a lot of buildings. For example, these are Daimaru at Shinsaibashi, Osaka and Kwansei Gakuin University.

Location:Kobe College was located at YamamotoStreet, but it is located in Okadayama, now. Okadayama is the name of the place in Nishinomiya where is a city along the Hankyu Line. It takes 15 minutes to go to Kobe College from the nearest station of the school. It located near Seiwa College, so Kobe College carries area of studies on theirs shoulders.

Characteristics:Roof: Kobe College’s roofs are very characteristic. Colors and shape are uncommon. Therefore, when the earthquake happened, it was difficult to repair roofs.

Floor: Similarly, floors are uncommon and made from marble. It is because; stone turn heat loose in summer. They have strange mechanism and edges of floors curve bends. It is because, Vories thought it is easy to clean floor when edges change the shape.

Wiring: We don’t see the wiring in Kobe College, when we spend at the school. Where does the wiring exist? Its answer is to exist between the ceiling and the roof. Therefore, outside is very beautiful and students are comfortable.

History

Since its foundation in 1875, Kobe College continues to provide a well-balanced education for women based on Christian principles. This is expressed in the school badge and color designed in 1885 by E.M.Brown, the third college president. The motif of the school badge is honewort which expresses harmony of "body" and "spirit" and "soul." The school color is dark blue which express "peace" and "truth."

About history of Kobe College's name

In 1873,two American missionaries, Eliza Talcott and Julia Dudley opened a private school in Hanakumamura, Kobe. They expanded this in 1875 into Kobe Home located in Yamamotodouri to provide education for young women 1875.Its name is "Onnagakkou" and English name is "Kobe Girls'School". This school is an opening of kobe college now. The first president is Miss Eiza Talcott.

In 1879It change school name "Eiwa-jogakkou".

In 1891
High school education of girls starts. And school name became "Kobe Eiwa-jogakkou".

In 1894It became "Kobe College". Both in name and in reality became College.

In 1933 A library main building was built by a design of Mr.William Merrell Vories(※1). In 1972 Historical materials room started. In 1984 A library new building is ground the fourth floor / building of basement the second floor. In 1998 The seeing and hearing center (AV library) was built.

In 2005 A library of an alumnus was established.Therefore it is gathered up a book by an alumnus as a library. A book or a picture are exhibited, too. ※1 He is born in U.S.A., and it is a catch figure architect with many West buildings in Japan. It is design a lot of catch figures of West building after a visit to Japan as an English teacher in all parts of Japan. In the school, the church, YMCA, the hospital, the department store, both the kind and styles are various. Kobe College is one of those.

There are 2624 students in Kobe College and 624 of them are freshman. Kobe College has 4 departments which are English department, general culture department, music department and psychology department. Students especially who belong to general culture department can learn a wide range of subjects in the first 2 years to find their interests and decide what to study in the next 2 years. In Kobe College, students can study in a small class therefore they can focus on their study as well as the relation ship between students and teachers can be much closer.

Many of students are from Kansai areas however; there are also some students who are from western Japan or the other parts of Japan. These students who are from a long distance live all by themselves. Many of them stay in an apartment which is located along the Hankyu Line. Kobe College also provides a dormitory in the school for the students therefore they can stay there for less pay compared with an apartment.

Kobe College has also accepted international students and over 10 international students this year are studying at the college. Some of them are accepted as an exchange student from universities in Australia and the United States. Instead of them, some students from Kobe College have sent over to these universities every year.

Students require gaining 124 credits for 4 years to complete the course. While they focus on the study, they enjoy the other activities outside of school, for example, a part time job, sports, taking lessons and group activities to be experienced, broaden their knowledge and lead a full university life.

It is evaluated that Top-class personnel are sent off to not only mass media or airlines but also society.The rate of employment to popular company is the highest at women’s college in Kansai. Especially the rate of employment in 2006 is 98.1% and psychology action subject is 100%.As the reason, there are many backing. For example, there are briefing for job applicants, Briefing by enterprise and Individual consultation. Students study ardently aiming at the future.
