Albert John "Al" DeRogatis (May 5, 1927 – December 26, 1995) was an American football player and television sportscaster.

DeRogatis was born in Newark, New Jersey and began his playing career at Newark's Central High School, earning All-State at center. At Duke University he made the 1948 All-America team as a tackle, going pro the following year with the NFL New York Giants. In 1951, he made the NFL All-Pro team.

Upon graduation from Duke, he married his high school sweetheart, Louise.

In 1952, an ankle injury ended his playing career. In 1953, he began working for Prudential Insurance, which he would remain at through 1986.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s DeRogatis worked as a color commentator for pro and college football telecasts on NBC, teaming primarily with Curt Gowdy for American Football League and later American Football Conference games, and working several Super Bowls and Rose Bowls in addition to regular-season games. DeRogatis also partnered with Marty Glickman in the early 1960s as the radio broadcast team for the New York Giants on WNEW (AM), before moving to NBC.

DeRogatis was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986. He died in 1995 in Spring Lake, New Jersey.

Legacy

"Sports Illustrated" magazine's "Dr. Z" (aka Paul Zimmerman) has rated DeRogatis as his #1 football analyst of all time. [ [http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/writers/dr_z/07/21/announcers/ Masters of the Mic: NFL] , Sports Illustrated news web site, retrieved June 23, 2007.]

Upon his death in 1995 DeRogatis was eulogized in the "Boston Globe" as a prototype for what it means to be a gentleman, in the sense of displaying a gracious, polite, kind and generous nature. The "Globe" also published a picture of DeRogatis in the NBC booth together with Curt Gowdy and Don Meredith in the "2006: The year in photos" series, after Curt Gowdy's death in 2006 [ [http://www.boston.com/news/specials/year_in_review/2006/gallery?pg=72 2006: The year in photos] , The Boston Globe, retrieved June 23, 2007. ]
