In Japan, a public health centre (Japanese: 保健所 "Hokensho") is not a doctor's clinic. It has responsibility for public health matters. It is also responsible for treatment of people with chronic health problems such as mental illness.
It also licenses beauty salons, barbers, and restaurants, and is responsible for animal control.
