width=300Carl Wark is a
hill fort andscheduled ancient monument onHathersage Moor in thePeak District ofEngland . It lies just inside theSheffield city boundary. The fort, 9,000 square metres in area, occupies a naturalescarpment , fortified by turf banks reinforced byboulder s.The date of the fort is uncertain. Claims that it is of the
Iron Age are supported by it lying in line with theRoman Rig dyke, while it also lies near theRoman road fromBrough-on-Noe toTempleborough . Alternatively, it may be aRomano-British construction, dating from shortly after the Roman withdrawal, probably the fifth century.While the fort would have offered some defence, it is in a curious location, overlooked by the higher
Higger Tor , suggesting that it was constructed in a time of relative peace.ee also
