Grove School (Madison, Connecticut)

Grove School is a coeducational therapeutic boarding and day school located in Madison, Connecticut which serves grades six to twelve and post-graduates. Madison is a semi-suburban area, about 20 minutes from New Haven, Connecticut. Grove School was founded by Jess Perlman.

Grove School serves students with dyslexia, obsessive compulsive disorder, Asperger's Syndrome, Tourette's Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, Bipolar disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, mild bulimia nervosa and mild anorexia nervosa. Grove School does not accept students with a diagnosis of moderate to severe cutting, conduct disorder, moderate to severe oppositional defiant disorder or chronic substance abuse problems.

History

*1934 - Grove School was founded. It opened as an all boys school.
*1956 - Dr. J. Sanford Davis becomes the CEO and President.
*1979 - Fire destroys the lodge killing 2 students
*1986 - Richard Chorney was hired as the executive director
*1991 - Grove School begins to accept girls.

tudents

As of 2005 there are 105 students at Grove School. One student is a day student and the rest are boarding students. There is about a 60:40 male-female student ratio. The majority of the students are from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey. Some other states are represented such as Illinois, Georgia, Ohio, California, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware.

Faculty

There are 3 psychiatrists, 7 therapists, 30 teachers (24 of which are also dormitory staff), and 12 advisors. Half the teachers are certified in Special Education in CT and the other half are content area certified in CT. The student teacher ratio is 4:1.

Graduation requirements

In order to graduate from Grove School, a student must have 4 years of history (including 1 year of civics), 4 years of P.E. and Health, 3 years of mathematics, 3 years of Science (1 of which must be biology) and 4 years of an elective.

Elective courses

Electives for the 2005-2006 year include Spanish 1 and 2, Basic Java Programming, Video Production, Life Drawing, Exploring Poetry, Current Social Issues, Honors Art, Game Theory and more.

College placement

There is an SAT preparation program available for juniors and seniors, especially tailored for Grove School.

In the 2004 SAT, 20% scored over 600 on verbal;20% scored over 600 on math and 25% scored over 1200 combined on the 2004 SAT.

The 2004-2005 graduates of Grove School are attending the following colleges: Union College, Suffolk University, Ithaca College, Manhattanville College, Alfred University and others. In past years, Grove graduates have attended Curry College, Mitchell College, Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University, Merrimack College, Clark University, Berkshire Community College, Purdue University, Mount Ida College, University of Connecticut, Berklee College of Music and more.

2007-2008 graduates are attending the following colleges; Frostburg State University, St. Thomas Aquinas College, New England College, UConn, Virginia Commonwealth University, NYIT, Wagner College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Curry College, Mitchell College and others.

Therapeutic element

Students see a therapist twice a week for individual therapy and a psychiatrist as necessary for medication management. They also meet in group therapy once a week.

There is a nurse's office on campus as well as three nurses and one nurse assistant. The nurses and nurse assistant may refer students to physicians if they show medical need. Students may also be referred to a registered dietician, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist and/or a speech therapist.

Extracurricular activities

Grove School has a varsity and junior varsity coed soccer team and basketball team. Grove School also has a boy's varsity and junior varsity baseball team, a girl's softball team and coed cheerleading. In the 2005-2006 school year, there is a poetry club, outdoors club, club, Student Council and Model UN. Traditional activities the student council plans includes pep rally, fall carnival, junior-senior prom, dress up dinners (which is a semi-formal dress code), and Halloween Dance. Regular Activities are also an important part of the campus life.
