Brazil ian company in the defense sector that specialized in producing tactical military trucks andarmored fighting vehicles , including theEE-T1 Osório ,EE-3 Jararaca ,EE-9 Cascavel andEE-11 Urutu .Engesa started as a private company in 1963. Originally it got involved with special vehicles by developing all-wheel-drive systems for retrofit onto commercial trucks. It also offered updating for obsolete WWII tanks. At the same time, the
Brazilian Army was trying to develop its own wheeled armored vehicle to replace obsolete equipment. Engesa took over that development, which resulted in the firstEE-9 Cascavel , a 6x6 vehicle with the so-called "Boomerang"rear suspension . Later, the vehicle was slightly widened to accept a 90mmgun turret .Another development was the
EE-11 Urutu , an amphibious armored personnel carrier equipped with the same type of suspension and transmission as the Cascavel. After many successful years of commercialization of wheeled armored vehicles, the company decided to developtracked vehicles .The
EE-T1 Osório was Brazil's entry into themain battle tank market. It was offered as a low cost alternative to theAbrams M1 (US) and Challenger (UK) tanks during trials in Saudi Arabia. The increased availability of modern American, British, and French tanks following the 1991 Gulf War ultimately undercut marketing of theEE-T1 Osório and it never entered production.Engesa, based in
São José dos Campos , Brazil, went intobankruptcy in 1993.
