Longbenton Community College is a large secondary school in Benton, North Tyneside. Operating under the two-tier system in North Tyneside, the school takes students from age 11-18. It is a specialist Technology College, and has advanced ICT facilities and a City Learning Centre ("see below") with some facilities for non-LBCC students.

Longbenton Community College is part of the North-West Cluster, which also includes George Stephenson High School and Seaton Burn Community College.

History

The school was originally built in 1951, and opened officially for the new year in September 1953. It was originally named after Thomas Addison and the girls and boys were kept separate. What is now East was the girls' side, and what is now West was the boys' side. What is now the HMT block was the girls canteen. At some point, likely in the 1960sFact|date=July 2007, the school was turned into a mixed college and became known as Longbenton High School.

Some time ago the school decided to reach out into the community and started adult teaching classes, often outside of school hours. It then became known as Longbenton Community High School. Eventually that became Longbenton Community College.

City Learning Centre

As the school is a Technology College, it was decided to place a City Learning Centre here in 1998. The building lies between the West and East blocks, and was officially opened in 2001. The main room is "e-learning"; other rooms include "Discovery", a conference room, the "e-Media" computer lab, and the library.

E-learning

E-learning is the main room in the CLC. It has over 50 computer terminals with software suitable for all levels of ICT knowledge, and often used by other schools from the area. The 4 plasma screens clearly present the work displayed on the main PC, as does the projector.

Library

The library is the only room that can be used by Longbenton Community College students (it is used exclusively by them). It has several computers and a wide range of reading material.
