Slanted type

Slanted type

Slanted type or oblique type is a distortion of regular type. It is not the same as italic type—italic (cursive) type is based on Aldus Manutius calligraphy, and oblique (slanted) is a mere distortion.

This confusion may have appeared when Adrian Frutiger named the slanted versions of his typefaces Univers and Frutiger "Italic".

Following this viewpoint, sans-serif typefaces very rarely have italic versions, with Gill Sans typeface being one of the rare exceptions.
