- USS Bennington (PG-4)
The first USS "Bennington" (PG-4), also known as "Gunboat No. 4," was a
gunboat of theUnited States Navy . Named for the town ofBennington, Vermont , she was laid down in June, 1888 at the Delaware River Iron Works inChester, Pennsylvania ; launched on3 June 1890 ; sponsored by Miss Anne Aston; and commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on20 June 1891 , withCommander Royal B. Bradford in command."Bennington" joined the
Squadron of Evolution and left New York on19 November 1891 on the Squadron's cruise toBrazil . Transferred to theSouth Atlantic Squadron on5 May 1892 , she cruised inSouth America n waters until19 July . She then visitedSpain andItaly to participate in the celebrations marking the quadricentennial of the discovery of America. "Bennington" returned toHampton Roads on26 March 1893 with the replicas of Columbus' vessels in tow. DepartingNew York City on6 August 1893 , the gunboat cruised in theMediterranean until leavingGibraltar on18 July 1894 for thePacific Squadron . She arrived atValparaíso ,Chile ,3 April andMare Island Navy Yard on30 April .She cruised along the
Pacific coasts of North andCentral America and inHawaii until leaving Mare Island on15 September 1898 . She steamed, viaHonolulu andGuam , toManila , arriving there on22 February 1899 , and en route took possession ofWake Island on17 January . "Bennington" cruised in thePhilippines assisting the Army in putting down the insurgents in thePhilippine-American War until3 January 1901 . She returned to Mare Island on19 August and went out of commission on5 September 1901.Recommissioned on
2 March 1903 , she cruised along the Pacific coasts of North and South America for the next two years. On the morning of21 July 1905 , while preparing to get underway inSan Diego Bay , twoboiler s burst showering the vessel with livesteam and scaldingwater . The ship sank but was subsequently refloated. 1 officer (Ensign Newman K. Perry) and 65 men were killed, while the rest on board (46 total) were burned; they are remembered by theUSS Bennington Monument in theFort Rosecrans National Cemetery ,Point Loma ,San Diego . On17 August , "Bennington" arrived at Mare Island and was decommissioned on31 October .The warship remained inactive for five more years. On
10 September 1910 her name was struck from theNaval Vessel Register , and she was sold on14 November 1910 for scrapping.References
