Kokborok tei Hukumu Mission was formed on August 10, 1993 in India with aims to develop the Kokborok as well as the Borok or Tripuri culture in the world. Subsequently it has got registration in 1994 under Societies Registration Act 1860 bearing the Society registration number 2368/94.

The historical background of KOHM

It was in the early nineties, when a group of Kokborok speaking Borok intellectuals started their struggle for the existence and survival of the Kokborok as well as Borok community as a whole. It is known facts that the Kokborok is a language of Borok people of the land of Twipra which is now known as Tripura situated in North-Eastern region of India. Beside Tripura, Borok people are also live in Assam, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh. Not only in India, Borok people are also live in large number in Bangladesh and Myanmar. It is worth considering that the Kokborok speaking people are racially known as Borok but geographically better known as Twiprasa or Tiprasa or Tipra or Tripuri of Tripura state. They comprise about 1.5 million at present.

The Kokborok speaking Borok people or Tripuri people are the branch of Boro people belongs to Tibeto-Burman linguistic family falls into the Sino-Tibetan linguistic group. With an aims to develop the Kokborok as well as the Borok or Tripuri culture in the world the Kokborok tei Hukumu Mission was formed on August 10, 1993. Subsequently it has got registration in 1994 under Societies Registration Act 1860 bearing the Society registration number 2368/94.

Organization nomenclature

The meaning of Kokborok tei Hukumu Mission; "Kok" means "language", "Borok" means "civilised people" or the "Borok people", "tei" means "and", "Hukumu" means "culture" and "Mission" bears the same meaning as in English.

It is often abbreviated as KOHM. The KOHM is totally a non-political, non-religious organization whose sole mission is to serve to promote to develop and to preserve the Borok literature, Borok culture, Borok tradition and its heritage.

Aims and objectives of KOHM

# To establish and maintain Balwadi Institution, libraries and reading room for the welfare of the members of the Society.
# To run condensed course of training for adult members of the Society.
# To forecast, maintain and improve friendly relation and co-operation among the members.
# To publish books, journals, posters for betterment of the youngsters in connection with the attainment of the objects of the Society.
# To collect subscriptions and donations from members and other to attain the objects of the Society.
# To acquire by purchase or lease or otherwise, lands and buildings and other properties movable or immovable as the Society from time to time may think fit for the welfare of the members of the Society.
# To accept bouquet, gift, grant and endowment for the attainment of the objects of the Society.
# To organize and undertake training in village industries for the welfare of the members of the Society.
# To do all such other things as may be conducive or incidental to the attainment of all or any of the above subjects.
# To work as a non-political and non-religious organization.
# To run a nutrition center.
# To participate in any program for teaching Kokborok.
# To undertake any activities for development of Kokborok writers, artists and cultural program.
# To procure manuscripts and rare collections related to Borok Culture from any sources with or without payment for their publications.
# Chethuang, a Kokborok Literary Magazine - the mouth-piece of the KOKBOROK TEI HUKUMU MISSION will be brought out quarterly from Talhing 1414 Twipra Bisi (December 2003- January 2004).
