Indeed, this island is easily the largest of theBritish Isles after Great Britain andIreland . It has an area of convert|841|sqmi|km2 - slightly under one per cent of the area of Great Britain. It is convert|24|mi|km from the nearest point of the mainland, from which it is separated bythe Minch .The northern part of the island is called
Lewis , the southern isHarris and both are frequently referred to as if they were separate islands. Thus the island is referred to as 'Lewis and Harris', 'Lewis with Harris', 'Harris with Lewis' etc.Thompson, Francis (1968) "Harris and Lewis". Newton Abbott. David & Charles.]Geography
The boundary between Lewis and Harris is formed by a line with Loch Resort (Reasort) (opposite Scarp) on the west and Loch Seaforth (Shiphoirt) on the east. The island does not actually have a common name in either English or
Scots Gaelic . Rarely, the collective name of the Long Island is used,Encyclopedia Britannica (1911) " [http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Lewis-With-Harris Lewis-with-Harris] ".] (Gaelic - an t-Eilean Fada) although this is normally applied to the entire Outer Hebrides. [Murray, W.H. (1966) "The Hebrides". London. Heinemann. Page 2] Lewis used to belong to the county ofRoss and Cromarty and Harris toInverness-shire , until 1975. The entire island group now belongs to theWestern Isles Council .Most of Harris is mountainous, with more than thirty peaks above convert|1000|ft|m|abbr=on high. Lewis is comparatively flat, save in the south-east, where Ben More reaches convert|1874|ft|m|abbr=on, and in the south-west, where Mealasbhal (1885 ft) is the highest point.
