YIMBY

YIMBY is an acronym for "Yes In My Back Yard" (or in rare occasions WHY In My Backyard), in contrast and opposition to the NIMBY phenomenon. Informal YIMBY coalitions exist in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Stockholm, Gothenburg and elsewhere to provide community support for affordable housing or market-rate property development over the objections of NIMBY, BANANA and bureaucratic opponents.

There is also a growing YIMBY movement to encourage the installation of clean energy sources, such as wind turbines, despite the opposition these generally face from NIMBY groups.

YIMBY often occurs regarding e.g. bypass road construction in sparsely populated areas, when people want the road to continue through a city to keep the sales to the travellers up. In this case YIMBY people want no change since they benefit from the present situation. In more densely populated areas there are more objection against the noise etc along a new road (NIMBY).

Generally people having objections to a project are more loud than people having no objections, making a change of a situation harder.
