London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Thompson Class A2 was a class of steam locomotive designed for express passenger work by Edward Thompson. There were three subclasses; the A2/1 (4 engines) which were originally ordered as V22-6-2 s, the A2/2 (6 engines) rebuilt from P22-8-2 s and A2/3 (15 engines) which were new builds. None has survived into preservation.Class A2/1
The A2/1 were originally ordered as V2 locomotives, as designed by
Sir Nigel Gresley , but were revised during construction into a4-6-2 'Pacific' arrangement under the instruction of Edward Thompson. The A2/1 Class retained the same boiler as the V2 Class, though the pressure was increased to 225psi.References
