Federico Commandino (
1509 -september 5 1575 ) was an Italian humanist andmathematician .Born in
Urbino , he studied atPadua and atFerrara , where he received his doctorate inmedicine . He translated the works of ancient mathematicians and was responsible for the publication of the works ofArchimedes . He also translated the works ofAristarchus of Samos ("On the masses and distances of the Sun and the Moon"),Pappus of Alexandria ("Mathematical collection"), andEuclid ("Elements"). Among his pupils wasGuidobaldo del Monte . Commandino maintained a correspondence with the astronomerFrancesco Maurolico . The proposition known as Commandino's theorem first appears in his work on centers of gravity.References
