Liam Watson

Liam Watson formed Toe Rag Studios in the early 1990s. Since then his collection of vintage musical instruments and recording equipment has grown and grown, attracting the cream of modern bands looking for that 'retro edge'. Notable acts to record with him at the studios include The White Stripes, The Cribs, The Kills, Holly Golightly, Madness, Billy Childish and The Zutons.

Liam is well known for his retro dress sense and the (nowadays) unusual practice of wearing a labcoat in the studio. This is because Liam is also proficient in the art of repairing/tweaking the vintage recording equipment he uses (and need not get his clothes dirty!)

At The Top Of His Game

With the advent of digital recording in the 1980s, music production started to become clinical in some respects; the recordings lost that 'live' feel. Liam Watson, a musician himself, decided to create his own studio where the techniques of the past masters such as George Martin and Joe Meek would be able to be employed and expanded upon to get a true recording of the sound. The resulting Toe Rag Studios is currently the epitome of analogue recording and is highly sought among recording venues by bands who value the classic recordings of the 1960s and '70s.

Number One

Liam Watson engineered and mixed The White Stripes' 2003 smash No.1 album "Elephant", produced by Jack White of the band.

2006/2007

Liam is currently working with veteran ska band Madness on their first original album in six years being recorded at toe-rag studios.

Liam also produced the newest album, Witchcult Today by doom metal band Electric Wizard in 2007.
