Sookmyung Women’s University is a private university in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Founded in 1906, Sookmyung is Korea’s first royal private educational institution for women. The university emblem resembles the Star of David.

History

*1906 Establishment of‘ Myeongshin Girl's School, financially sponsored by Empress Sunheon.
*1948 Upgrade to ‘Sookmyung Women's College'.
*1955 Upgrade to 'University' status.
*1995 Establishment of General Development Plan for 2006, the 100th anniversary of the school's foundation, and declared the 2nd founding of the school.
*2003 Completion of the Renaissance Plaza and the 2nd Foundation Campus.
*2005 Sookmyung established its goal to produce 10% of Korea's leaders by the year 2020.
*2006 The 100th anniversary of Sookmyung's foundation.
*2007 A new program called‘S Leadership' is born.

Campus

Sookmyung Women's University consists of a Main Campus and a 2nd Foundation Campus. The Main Campus is a beautiful setting in harmony with nature. The 2nd Foundation Campus, constructed upon the 2nd founding and declaration of the university, is the cultural center of the university and home to the 'S Leadership Program'. The Renaissance Plaza, which has become a landmark, symbol and hub of Sookmyung Women's University, especially features a variety of cultural attactions and activities.Sookmyung Women's University has been traditionally known as one of Korea's leading universities and has successfully created an embracing and engaging campus environment. In 1998, Sookmyung started to operate Wireless LAN.

Educational goals and statistics

Sookmyung has made an effort to develop women leaders by awakening their capabilities and expertise. In 1995, Sookmyung Women’s University developed its vision as the “World’s Premier Leadership University.” The university has set additional and higher goals for the future. On the 100th anniversary of its foundation in 2006, Sookmyung established its goal to produce 10% of Korea’s leaders by the year 2020. For this goal, Sookmyung launched its 'S Leadership' program, which focuses on Spirit, Skill, Service, and Strength as the foundational virtues for its future leaders.

S Leadership

Sookmyung Women's University endeavors to produce the women leaders who can lead the Korean nation through the fast-changing and developing phases of the 21st Century. Out of our accumulated leadership capacity and infrastructures, a new program called 'S Leadership' was born. 'S Leadership' is a future-oriented leadership program based on four characteristics beginning with the letter 'S': Creative 'Spirit', Future-oriented 'Skill', Service-minded 'Service', and Healthy body and 'Strength' of Mind.

Education at Sookmyung Women's University

Sookmyung Women's University is famous for leading the way in offering various kinds of programs to produce future leaders. The School of General Education for Leadership and the Interdisciplinary Special Programs to Nurture Professional Women are a few examples. Sookmyung is also offering dual degree programs and student exchange programs to produce future leaders.

Division of General Education for LeadershipFirst-year students of Sookmyung Women's University automatically belong to the Division of General Education for Leadership and are guided into their academic journey towards becoming global leaders. By receiving integrated practical education that enhances problem-solving skills and creative thinking, they are able to specifically enhance their leadership capabilities within their respective fields. In addition, special leadership training and education at the Global Leadership Institute completes Sookmyung's leadership training agenda.

Mentor ProgramA reinvigorated mentoring program helps facilitate successful career launches for graduates and prepares them with core job-related abilities for various professional job categories. In addition, Sookmyung's wide-ranging and practical educational system provides broad industry-academic cooperation that offers students diverse career choices and on-the-job training opportunities.

Dual Degree ProgramSookmyung Women's University is the first Korean university to offer a dual degree program that allows students to earn degrees from two institutions. Students are exposed to more comprehensive and integrative approaches to their majors by studying four semesters at each school. Not only does this program provide an advantage for employment opportunities and graduate studies overseas, but also for broadened views and experiences that all leaders can embrace. In order to provide students with many opportunities to study abroad, Sookmyung plans to gradually expand partner universities for the dual degree program.
