LeMay Range

LeMay Range

LeMay Range (coord|70|55|S|69|20|W|) is a mountain range 64 km (40 mi) long with peaks rising to 2,000 m, extending in a northwest-southeast direction from Snick Pass to Uranus Glacier in central Alexander Island. It was first seen from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and the north and east portions mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. Later, it was resighted from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947-48, and named by Ronne for Gen. Curtis LeMay, Deputy Chief of Air Staff for Research and Development of the then USAAF, which furnished equipment for the expedition. The range was remapped in detail from RARE photos by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960.
