- William Allman Memorial Arena
The William Allman Memorial Arena, originally Stratford Arena, is an ice hockey arena in Stratford, Ontario. It was built in 1924. It was used by the Stratford Kroehlers of the Ontario Hockey League up until 1951, and is currently home to the Stratford Cullitons.
The arena is widely considered one of the finest old arenas in Canada and has been used by numerous film and television crews, including in Bauer's "Leave an Impression" advertising campaign. The arena is also nicknamed the "Asylum" and the "Old Barn" In the 1980s the Stratford Cullitons attempted to boost ticket sales, by filling empty seats with residents of the local psychiatric ward. The Allman is also said to have many rats that live in the building. Fact|date=February 2007 Local lore is that, spotting a rat before a game brings luck to the home team.
John Kastner, a long standing member of the Stratford Minor Hockey Association, founded the Stratford Cullitons in 1952 - the city's local Junior hockey club.
Kastner, who is the Editor of the local Stratford newspaper the Stratford Beacon Herald - a newspaper he also founded before it was bought by Sun Media in 1996 - used his paper to help build a name for the club in its early years. The paper would often and continues today to feature in depth coverage and profiles on the players - some of whom have gone on to have NHL careers.
The list of NHLer's who began their careers with the Cullitons includes: Rob Blake (LA), Mark Bell (Toronto), Boyd Devereaux (Detroit), Steve Rice (Minnesota), Nelson Emerson (LA), Rem Murray (Edmonton), Paul Cluff (Columbus), Ed Olczyk (Chicago), Chris Pronger (Edmonton) and several more.
A portrait of Queen Elizabeth hangs at one end of the rink.
