Edward Perry "Bud" Stewart (
June 15 1916 -June 21 2000 ) was an Americanoutfielder inMajor League Baseball who had a 9-year career (1941-1942, 1948-1954). Born inSacramento, California Ed attended UCLA from 1934-37. In the summer of 1937 Ed signed with the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League. Teaming-up with Ted Williams, San Diego won the 1937 PCL Championship. Ed remained with the Padres until Oct. 1,1940 when he was purchased by the Pittsburgh Pirates, debuting for Frankie Frisch's Pirates on April 19,1941. A speedy and versitle defensive outfielder, Ed also led the National League in Pinch Hits with 10 in 1941. Ed played for the Pirates until June 1942 when he enlisted in the United States Army serving until December 1945. Ed spent 1946 with the Hollywood Stars(PCL) and in March 1947 was traded to the Yankee organization, spending 1947 with the Kansas City Blues(Amer.Assc.). Ed began the 1948 season as a teammate of Joe Dimaggio and the New York Yankees. On May 13,1948 Ed was traded to the Washington Senators where he became a fan favorite, placing second in Triples (13) in the AL in 1948. On December 11,1950 Ed was traded to the Chicago Whitesox and ended his career as a premier pinch hitter, retiring on June 9,1954. During and after his playing days Ed was a physical education instructor in Inglewood, Ca. and appeared as an extra in several Hollywood films. A Baseball legend, supported by Ed himself, had Ed facing Satchel Paige,in a 1948 game, and hitting a triple through Satch's legs. He died inPalo Alto, California at age 84.ee also
