Dragonlance campaign setting created byMargaret Weis andTracy Hickman . She is the daughter of a disgraced Solamnic Knight named Gregor Uth Matar and his first wife, Rosamun. She is also the half-sister of both Raistlin andCaramon Majere .Biography
Kitiara is beautiful, a skilled warrior and, above all else, she is cold and calculating. Power-hungry, she has never been truly able to call someone a friend. In many ways, she and Raistlin are much alike. Neither would hesitate to betray an ally if presented with a guarantee at supreme power.
Kitiara once fell in love with a half elf named
Tanis Half-Elven , and later seduced the knightSturm Brightblade , with whom she secretly had a child,Steel Brightblade .During the
War of the Lance , Kitiara became a Dragon Highlord, withSkie as her personal dragon. While in Flotsam, she found Tanis disguised as one of her own soldiers and assumed that he too had enlisted. This meeting rekindled their feelings for each other, and she encouraged Tanis to stay with her as her lover. But Tanis came to his senses shortly after, and fled from Kitiara in self-disgust to rejoin his companions on their flight into the Blood Sea.In the North, Kitiara led an attack on the High Clerist Tower, the defence of which was commanded by Sturm Brightblade and the Elven princess
Laurana . In the course of battle, Kitiara killed Sturm, but he managed to delay her long enough to allow Laurana to successfully use a dragon orb to lure two of Kitiara's dragons into a trap. The dragon orb also caused the draconians in Kitiara's army to go berserk which lead to her army being routed. Kitiara then confronted Laurana on the tower walls, where she taunted the elfwoman with the news that Tanis was with her.Kitiara then returned to Flotsam only to find that Tanis had left her. Riding Skie, she pursued the half-elf's ship into the Blood Sea but failed to capture Tanis before his ship went down in the Maelstrom.
Meanwhile the Good Dragons had entered the war and Kitiara's rival, Laurana, had been appointed Commander of the Knights of Solamnia. Laurana then led her forces, known as the Whitestone Army, into batle with Kitiara's army and again Kitiara's force was defeated with Kitiara's deputy Bakaris being captured. The Whitestone Army then liberated the key city of Kalaman.
The Emperor Ariakas, the leader of the Dragonarmies, then went to execute Kitiara for the defeats she had suffered. However, the death knight -
Lord Soth stayed the Emperor's hand and Kitiara then managed to convince the Emperor she had a plan to capture Laurana, now known as the Golden General, and defeat the Whitestone Army.Kitiara sent a false message to Laurana, telling the elfwoman that Tanis was dying and wanted to see her, which Kitiara would only allow in exchange for Laurana bringing Bakaris to her. Laurana fell for this trick and was captured by Lord Soth. With the Golden General in her power, Kitiara then traveled to Kalaman and promised to murder Laurana unless the Whitestone Forces surrendered.
Later on, in the climax of the War, Tanis met with Kitiara in Neraka and offered to willing serve the Highlord if she would release Laurana. Kitiara agreed to consider his offer, but she had already decided to destroy Laurana and have her soul granted to Lord Soth. Tanis managed to turn the tables on Kitiara though when he killed Emperor Ariakas and seized the Crown of Power. Laurana then broke free, attacking Kitiara and then Tanis, which caused the half-elf to drop the Crown of Power. All the Dragonarmy troops present then began fighting each other for the Crown.
Kitiara tracked down Tanis and Laurana who had attempted to escape in the confusion. Kitiara then again gave Tanis the chance to become her lover forever. He refused in favor of Laurana, whom he trusted and loved in truth. Surprisingly, Kitiara then allowed them to escape from her and Lord Soth.
After the War of the Lance, Kitiara led her Dragonarmies against the city of Palanthas, hoping to allow her half-brother Raistlin back into the world from the Abyss in his quest to defeat the Dark Queen,
Takhisis . It was at this time that Kitiara was mortally wounded by Raistlin's apprentice,Dalamar , who had to stop his master's entry into the human plane. As she died, Kitiara realized that the death knight -Lord Soth - wished for her to become his undead companion, and beseeched Tanis Half-Elven to keep her soul safe. Faced with dying himself and losing his elven bride, Laurana, Tanis let the last of his human insecurities go when he allowed Soth to claim Kit's bodyOr|date=February 2008.Lord Soth failed to claim Kitiara's soul however, when he was drawn into the Mists of
Ravenloft . Kitiara's soul is at a later point mentioned to be preparing for judgement by Takhisis, though this contradicts the mention of a vessel containing Kitiara's soul in the Legends trilogy.Family tree
