Built in 1941 the Federal Reformatory for Women was state of the art: hospitals equipped with the latest technology, a female doctor directed the hospital and supervised six physicians, ten registered nurses, a dentist, and a laboratory technician. There were six dormitories with communal laundry, bathing, and toilets located on all floors. Each also had a kitchen with a stove, a dishwasher, and a refrigerator. In addition, the recreation building had orchestral instruments, twelve classrooms for English and music instruction, a multilanguage library, and sewing and weaving rooms. Outside activities included gardening, farming, tennis, baseball, badminton, and walking around the prison grounds.
In 1942, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, it was selected to hold Japanese, German and Italian immigrants for
internment . It held prisoners from Central and South America, married couples without children from the United States, and about fifty Japanese language teachers from California. The facilities at Seagoville made it the most unusual camp operated by the INS, most who were in alien enemy internment camp did not have the same luxury. A contemporary observer described a typical dorm room as having "wall-to-wall carpet, a lovely twin bed, writing desk and wash stand, as good as any hotel room."External links
