The village used to thrive due to the business of a local dye factory owned by Thomas Rycroft. The factory is sadly not in operation anymore. The employee count was less than 20, and the factory went out of business recently (late 2005). It is situated in the "Bottom end" of the village. The local landmark chimney has also been demolished.
Following a fire at the "Top end" factory several years ago, a new housing estate has been developed with houses designed to look traditional. This effect has been carried out on neighbouring estates as well.
Before 1804, Belmont was known as Hordern [ [http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/leisure/walks/display.var.1203620.0.belmont_at_its_best_on_wonderful_winter_walk.php Belmont at its best on wonderful winter walk] , Ron Freethy, Lancashire Telegraph. Sharples in the parish of Bolton-le-Moors [ [http://www.gmcro.co.uk/guides/gazette/gazzs.htm Greater Manchester Gazetteer "S"] , Greater Manchester County Record Office. Retrieved 11th March 2008.] .Reservoirs
