- Pavie Ridge
Pavie Ridge or Cap Pavie or Île Pavie is an
isolated rockyridge rising over 500 m, which extends south and west fromMartin Glacier toMoraine Cove , and forms the southeastern limit ofBertrand Ice Piedmont , on the west coast ofGraham Land . Pavie Ridge is located at coord|68|34|S|66|59|W| and has an elevation of 500 m. The name "Île Pavie" was given in 1909 by theFrench Antarctic Expedition underJean-Baptiste Charcot to anisland , or possiblecape , shown on theFrench Antarctic Expedition maps in coord|68|27|S|66|40|W|. From a position 15mile svague|which miles? the nautical miles normal in polar exploration? or statute miles?|date=March 2008 southeast of Jenny Island,Maurice Bongrain ,French Antarctic Expedition surveyor, made sketches of this feature which were labeled "Île Pavie" and "Cap Pavie".This general area was surveyed in 1936 by the
British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) underJohn Riddoch Rymill , but the feature named byJean-Baptiste Charcot was not identified. Following further surveys by theFalkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1948,Jean-Baptiste Charcot 's "Île Pavie" was identified fromMaurice Bongrain 's sketches as the feature now namedRed Rock Ridge . The nameRed Rock Ridge is now too firmly established to alter. The name Pavie Ridge has therefore been approved for theisolated rockyridge described above as forming the southern limit ofBertrand Ice Piedmont , and whose position is not far removed from the original position indicated byJean-Baptiste Charcot . Pavie Ridge was named byJean-Baptiste Charcot , presumably forAuguste J. M. Pavie (1847-1925), Frenchdiplomat andexplorer .
