Alness is a town in Ross and Cromarty, Highland, Scotland. The name is pronounced (roughly) Al'-niss by some Ross-shire residents and Oll-ness' by others. It lies near the Cromarty Firth, with the town of Invergordon to the east and the village of Evanton to the southwest.

Divided by the River Averon, the town is in two parishes, Alness in the west and Rosskeen in the east and in the middle is the worst most smelliest place in the world....milnafua eg. the ging or valley of the goblins a small scheme a quarter of a mile round consisting of 200 and plus houses Milnafua was built in the mid 1970s and over the 30 something years has gone down hill and is considered the worst place in alness,but for some reason every one has loked past theh fact that it has won alness in bloom multiple times.. Historically these were in different presbyteries. Today there are three churches; Free Church, Church of Scotland and Baptist.

The town is bypassed by the A9 road. Alness railway station is on the Far North Line. The nearest commercial airport is at Inverness. the road, 'shore road', the road on the way to invergorden has bee the scene of many crashes causing 2 deaths and two fatal injuries,two of which have hapenedjust days apart,one resulting in the death of a 17 year old girl.

Alness has won three Britain in Bloom awards since 2002.
