Originally drafted in the sixth round (150th overall) of the
1998 NHL Entry Draft by theMighty Ducks of Anaheim , Hunter was traded to theNew York Islanders for a 4th round draft pick in the2000 NHL Entry Draft . He set franchise records for theBridgeport Sound Tigers of theAmerican Hockey League in all three scoring categories (30–35–65). He made his NHL debut in the 2002 Playoffs, registering 1 goal and 1 assist in 4 games.Hunter broke into the NHL full-time with the Islanders in 2003–2004 and was tied for first on the team in goals (25, with
Mariusz Czerkawski ) and tied for total points (51, withOleg Kvasha ). He finished third in voting for theCalder Trophy in 2004, losing toAndrew Raycroft of theBoston Bruins .Hunter has since become an important player for the Islanders. He is consistently among the league leaders in hits and is one of the Islanders best penalty killers. Although he is a big physical presence, he rarely takes a penalty and is one of the cleanest players who play a physical game. Hunter is also known to contribute offensively from time to time.
When Islanders
assistant captains Brendan Witt andMike Sillinger went down with injuries during the 2007–08 season, Hunter wore the 'A' to fill in for the leadership the Islanders lost on the ice.On February 22, 2008 the Islanders re-signed Hunter to a 5-year, $10 million deal through the 2012–13 season.
